Certificate in Community Interpreting Level 1

This course is suitable for candidates who would like to learn about the role of a Community Interpreter and explore the public and voluntary sectors and how they support community needs. The role of the interpreter is fully explored and discussed. This is a course for committed individuals who would like to start their career as Interpreters in the Community. It is suitable for candidates who have experience in interpreting for friends and relatives or other members of the community in public service settings in the UK and are interested in developing their skills and knowledge in order to find paid employment.

Summary

 

Level 1 Award in Understanding Community Interpreting
The Level 1 Award is aimed at learners who are new to the subject and wish to learn a little about what is involved in being a Community Interpreter.

Who is the course aimed at?

 

This course is for people who are fluent in English and a other language. Participants will normally be native speakers of another language. Participants are not expected to have any previous experience of Community Interpreting, but they may be interested in working in the field in the future.

 

Participants will have been in the UK long enough to have gained a basic awareness of provision of British public services.

Entry requirements

 

Fluent in English (oral and written – minimum ESOL level 2, C1 CEF or equivalent) and native speaker of another language
• Some experience of interpreting (volunteering or otherwise)
• Knowledge of UK public service providers
• Availability over the 12 weeks period
• Committed to do autonomous learning (research and weekly assignments)
• Internet access and Skype

• practice interpreting skills doing consecutive interpreting and sight translations
• Learn to assess your own work
• Understand and explain the Public Service system in the UK, as well as the role of the community interpreters

• You will learn to research and build your own glossary

 

Attendance

 

Successful completion of the course involves a minimum of 80% attendance.
